As an Englishman who from time to time wanders around N American looking at
real trains, I have also wandered into hobby stores that claim to have S and
have come away disappointed.

Then one day whilst staying in the Californian town of Palmdale (it's
halfway between Cajon and Mojave!), I thought I'd try an establisment called
Big Boys Hobbies (?), which claimed to have S.

On entering the premises, half was devouted to cars and aircraft, not
promising. Then the gentleman behind the counter enquired if he could help.
Well asking if he had some S, he pointed to the rear of the store. Well
moving there I could see green & yellow boxes on shelves - obviously not a
reason to get too excited. Then I saw the Pacific Rail Shops, American
Models and others.

Well eventually I was thrown out by the gentleman and his wife, claiming it
was closing time and they wanted to go home! I had spent hundreds of
dollars, only restrained by the need to get them in my bags for the flight
home.

Well this couple, no doubt bemused to meet an S scaler who was English,
thought further inspection was warranted and they escorted me to a local
eating place. Unfortunately this hobby store (later known as Palmdale
Hobbies) has changed hands and I believe it's S scale stock has migrated
east to Arizona to keep that gentleman happy as he builds the new version of
the SLE&P.

Yes I'm sure Bill & Sandie Winans are still bemused and I'm happy to report
one store didn't lie.

I understand most shops don't have a lot of s scale but how many times
I have walked into a store that advertises 'All Scales' and they don't
have a shred of s scale or flyer!
A little truth in advertising would be nice
