Ed,

Thanks! Your chronicle clearly explains why no--at least I have never seen
one--Enhorning diesels ever show up at model railroad flea markets. I have
come upon parts of PermaBilt box car kits and have purchased three kits from
people who wanted to shed them but never an Enhorning F unit. Your description
explains why.

The only fact I can add to your story is that whenever I traveled from my home
in Iowa to summer workshops or classes for teachers, I of course traveled by
rail, changing trains in Chicago with time during the layover for a stroll from
Union Station downtown. On two such trips--one in the summer of 1967, the
other in the summer of 1968, I made a bee-line for the All-Nation Hobby Shop.
I think it still had that name.

I was heading for summer study and bought nothing, but I took it all in. On
both occasions I noticed the S scale Enhorning F units in a display case. If I
recall correctly, one set was painted in the SP passenger scheme, the other
possibly for the UP or maybe the NYC. I can't recall for sure. They looked
pretty good and must have been the revised units. The units looked so good, and
each time I came close to scrapping [selling] my Lionel stuff for a more
manageable size.

Eventually, in 1986 I did but not because of Enhorning diesels.

Tom
