Ugly switcher fans...

I just posted some quick photos of my just completed conversion of the SMM FM
H-10-44 switcher into a Southern Pacific H-12-44. I included a shot of the
"beast' next to one of my ALCo S-2 switchers for comparison. They are in the
photos section under "Bob's FM Switcher".

The model represents one of the first order of eight H-12-44's (a very early
H-12-44 model) on the Southern Pacific. Four additional classes followed of
more modern designs and came without the barrel-keg headlights, for a total of
45 FM H-12-44's.

The conversion involves removing all of the hood louvers and replacing them
with smaller and different vents & louvers, adding screens to doors, filling in
the nose top, removing the roof overhang plus the addition of Espee's many
unique appliances. After adding all of those Zebra stripe decals you start to
appreciate Espee's the more modern simple paint scheme of scarlet and grey. I
may also need new reading glasses!

Unlike the SMM 70 tonner, the FM kit comes complete with a RTR drive train
requiring no assembly (Yeah!). For those thinking about building one of these
brutes, the only difficult (?) part of building the original kit is the
construction of the end handrails. Kim King created one fantastic single-piece
body casting for this engine! Thank you, Jim. This engine makes a great
companion piece to the AM Train Masters.
