All --

It all depends on what attracts you to trains. I understand the person who
just
gets off on watching trains go by. For that, a staging yard that services a
triple- or four-track mainline around-the-room oval is perfect. Perhaps a
skyboard backdrop and some ballast are all that's needed to complete the image.

To this old geezer, this sort of mainline train-watching takes me back to my
childhood alongside the Mighty NYC. And for Bill Lane, who gets off on
ultimate
brass detailing and painting, this sort of operation seems ideal.

Personally, I prefer operation. But sometimes, when no one's watching, I just
run eight trains, one after the other, or perhaps a couple simultaneously, in
and out of staging.

Regarding whether to build a permanent layout, well, that depends on one's life
expectancy. For me, everything is now as "permanent" as it's ever gonna be. I
am in my seventies, so my present layout is definitely my last. When I check
out (assisted living, institutionalization, or death), portability or lack
thereof will be irrelevant.
