You can't just stop at will and back up on a mainline, depending on the type
of authority you use to occupy it.
Thus, if you're hauling butt, and due to inattention/whatever you loose
track of where you're at: Then you will blow a slow order, and if you do,
you will pray to God you don't get something on the ground as a result of
it.
When running in new territory, the hardest part is counting DOWN from the
mile posts. When the MP's are getting larger (counting up) it's a
straightforward affair to keep up with your new territory. (i.e. MP 386 +
20 poles will be one half mile past MP 386.) Not so when traveling in the
direction where the MP's are descending.
In other words, let's say you're new to territory, and you have an order on
your sub that calls for 10 MPH at MP 385 + 38. That so... you'll have to
have 100 cars at 10,000 tons whoa'd up from 35 MPH to 10 MPH at that point.
Truth of the matter, you'll really need to be at 10 MPH as you're leaving MP
386, for your slow order is only 2 poles away once that point is reached.
