The S/Sn3 Buyers Guide (Bill Wade's predecessor to Bob Nalbone's 1/64 Scale 
Modeling Guide) also had an article on building an FA-1 from the AM FA-2 which 
was quite good.

I've contemplated splicing the AM plug door boxcar to make either a 50 ft 
boxcar or early steel REA express reefer, but haven't tried it yet.
