Mark:

Dick Karnes will surely give you a much more definitive reply, but I would also
agree with Chris. I have many of the Shinohara #6 turnouts on my layout in
industrial and yard areas, and their performance has been flawless.

There is a lot of discussion in S-scale circles that the geometry of the
Shinohara #6 is too short, creating a turnout which is much closer to the
geometry of a typical #5 turnout. But the late, great track planner John
Armstrong long ago recommended using #5 turnouts in situations where a #6 would
normally be used. John felt that the performance of a #5 turnout would be
almost identical to a #6, and would save space on your layout.

I would not recommend using the Shinohara #6 for a crossover, or in any
situation where you are planning to run cars longer than about 50 feet, or in
any mainline situation where trains would be taking the diverging route at
speed. But, for low-speed switching service, I think you will be pleased with
the Shinohara #6.
