Resistance soldering for model railroaders has been around a long, long time.
The earliest reference I have found is in Model Railroader magazine’s “Trade
Topics” column for November, 1949.

It describes the “Pres-to-Heat” soldering tool from The Housing Foundation,
Inc. of Deep River, Connecticut. The tool consisted of a transformer power unit
and a “heating unit”, which was a pair of movable carbon electrodes like the
jaws of pliers. It cost $22.50 in 1949 dollars.

MR says it is “a really great advance in soldering technique. It’s so simple to
operate that our secretary, who never before held a soldering iron in her hand,
soldered to 1/16- inch strips of brass together in 20 seconds.”

Pullman cars in Aransas Pass service afford passengers an atmosphere of quiet
refinement, evidenced in the luxury of the interior furnishings. Compartments
and drawing rooms are attractively decorated, and a pleasant seclusion is
assured. Comfortable mattresses, immaculate linens and convenient reading lamps
meet with the approval of overnight travelers.
