Resistance soldering for model railroaders has been around a long, long time.
The earliest reference I have found is in Model Railroader magazine’s “Trade
Topics” column for November, 1949.
It describes the “Pres-to-Heat” soldering tool from The Housing Foundation,
Inc. of Deep River, Connecticut. The tool consisted of a transformer power unit
and a “heating unit”, which was a pair of movable carbon electrodes like the
jaws of pliers. It cost $22.50 in 1949 dollars.
MR says it is “a really great advance in soldering technique. It’s so simple to
operate that our secretary, who never before held a soldering iron in her hand,
soldered to 1/16- inch strips of brass together in 20 seconds.”
