Ed, The B&O cabs in the Cincinnati area were black because as they aged and leaked they were tarred instead of repairing them. There is 1 in the northern Ky museum and 1 in a park in Washington Court House both with tarred roofs. Thanks bert

The consensus among CNJ fans is that black you see is soot. The CNJ was almost bankrupt when the photos of the black roofs appear. They questions posed is why would a broke railroad spend any money on painting stainless steel roofs? But, I am sure you could weather the roof to make it look like the CNJ's RDCs and cover the crazed finish. I dug my RDC out of the basement today and hope to bring to work on Monday.
