Ottawa, Canada ...
One of the very finest NASG conventions that Mary and I ever attended was in
Ottawa in 1976.
We thought we would never get there as it is loooong drive, but once in
Ottawa you found it a most beautiful city and a photographers delight.
Back then there were many very good S gaugers living there, the most famous
was Dick Arthur and his monstrous S scale layout. What I remember most is
how Dick placed a movie camera on a flat car and ran it around filming his
layout, later he actually taped a sound track to the film, absolutely
amazing. His model work was also exceptional. Reg Bilodeu also had great
scale layout, what I most remembered about that was his silver paper skies,
his machine shop and the Locomotive he scratch built in that shop and how he
had it blocked up and it ran perfectly on a display. I'm sure Reg won many
awards with that locomotive, I believe it was an Early American
Consolidation. Frank Milotte's layout was opened several times for us.
Everyone was so friendly and many of our American S gauge friends also
attended the convention.
Mary and I followed the Rideau Canal back to stateside. Yes, a wonderful
convention, celebrating our Nations 200th birthday, that is why they named
it the Constitutional Convention. ( I have a rather large slide file on that
trip.8>)
I don't know how many are still living from that convention, but I want to
thank them again from the bottom of my heart... Thank You!
"S"ee Ya,
Bill (FRaley)
