Cool! As long as we're discussing helixes, a friend of mine in N scale did the very same thing for his layout helix. He simply cut a spiral on the plywood in an ever decreasing radius and then just lifted the centre, separating the different levels with small blocks of wood. Worked just fine. Unfortunately its a little hard to find 12-foot wide plywood in S.
