I agree the 3 rail bubble has benefited the O scalers but what I said was
that O scalers don't associate themselves with the toy train crowd, they
consider themselves scale modelers with more in common with HO and N scale than
with 3 rail toy trains. If S scalers associate ourselves with the other scales
we have a much larger customer base than if we just consider ourselves S or
Flyer guys.
There's many more scale modelers who would consider 1:64 modeling than there
are flyer guys who want to buy S scale so instead of worrying about what
lionel/flyer might produce I'd rather think about how to get the mainstream
scale companies interested in making S stuff. Economically it makes a lot of
sense, the other scales are probably over bought while 1:64 scale is under
bought so a rotation into S could be good for the hobby and for the
manufacturers pocketbooks.
The demographics are on our side as most older modelers find a larger size
easier to work with but they don't want to maintain the space required for O
scale so S scale is the natural choice if it was just more easily available and
if it didn't carry the price premium of an under produced
product.....DaveBranum
