Bill: I think that if anybody had seen this section of track I'm talking about, there would no doubt that it was going to need some work, but, prototypically, as long as the trains stayed on the track, that was good enough for me.
That changed when I re-trucked the streamlined passenger cars with AM sprung Budd trucks, then I began having problems. Anyway, I got the sub-ballast done on the re-laid section of track as I described, and I believe it's going to work. As far as Stewart brake castings go, on the underbody, they are good enough for my purposes. If anyone can tell the difference, it's because the car turned over or they picked it up to see what sex it is. Besides, if you look at the prototype photo of C.I.R.X. 2267 that I posted a while back, it has a Stewart-colored control valve hanging on the bottom, proving there's a prototype for everything :<)!
