One place that S is missing, are in product announcement in prototype
Railroad Societies. I belong to both the Santa Fe, and Southern Pacific
Societies, and have never a product review of anything in S. Plenty of HO, and
N, no S.

Subject: {S-Scale List} Promoting S In The Modeling Press

The recent string initiated by Bob's request for articles for the 1:64 MODELING
GUIDE has prompted me to share a thought with this group that I have shared
before. Specifically, while there are many avenues to promote our favorite
scale, one that it seems to me has maximum leverage is through articles in the
mainline 'multi-scale' magazines. There are five that come to mind: MR/GMR,
RMC, NMRA Magazine, MRN and Shortline & NG Gazette. These publications are
generally aimed at serious modelers of all scales and collectively must reach a
very large percentage of all modelers. If we want to draw folks in from other
scales by showing them what's possible in S, it's been my opinion (and my
'mission', I guess) that we should 'meet them on their own turf (i.e., in their
own magazine) and not expect them to 'look us up' by searching out and reading
an S-only print or electronic publication. This is not to say that S-only
publications don't serve a purpose, they
do; but their primary readership, I would think, will be folks already in S.

I have had considerable success having articles published in these magazines
(with at least three additional to be in print by next spring) by selecting
topics that are of interest to modelers in any scale. This means: 1) including
some meaningful, unique prototypical research/information and/or 2)
demonstrating some unique modeling technique, material or concept. It's not
sufficient to just send a magazine a piece about a finished model or scene
without one or both of these elements. While quality photos are required, the
content of the piece must offer something new to the magazine's readers...and
something they can apply to their modeling/layout, no matter what the scale.

My experience is that the magazines mentioned above want 'good stuff'
irrespective of what scale the author/modeler works in. And if the 'good stuff'
is done in S, hopefully some readers will get a new appreciation for our
favorite scale.

I would be glad to assist anyone who has an idea for an article in any way I
can, reading manuscripts, etc. Contact me off line at
[email protected] if you'd like.
