Most of us have not seen the Garland vents up close. Don Thompson was with
me a little over a year ago at a local short line that is all Baldwin all
the time. Possibly the last place in the world that runs Baldwins for a
living every day.

Anyway Eagle Eye Don spotted the vent on a car there. I know a few folks
there so I went back about a week later. They would not let me climb on the
car but got an employee (actually the owner's son) to go up on the car and
take tons of photos and made the sketches I needed. They are very railfan
friendly. I had the vent designed an hour later!

The vent is designed to redirect air while the train is moving and create a
vacuum which vents the car. I had no idea what it looked like until I got my
photos. Unfortunately there was no way for me to portray this part of the
vent accurately and expect it to get cast. That thin curved wall would have
failed to fill every time. The rest of the vent is 100% correct though.

Thank You,
Bill Lane
