Bill, Don't forget a fresh set of eyes mixed with someone who has
already had similar problems with that same engine. A good friend has
offered me a beautifully custom painted UP FEF, to replace my yet
unpainted model. However, I know what I had to do to get mine to run
correctly. That means the custom paint job would be fine until the
paint would be rubbed through. After that minor corrective surgery
would destroy more paint before all the shorts were fixed.
Along the same lines, I do have a nicely painted Challenger that also
like to spark and short every chance it gets. The corrective surgery
has helped, but not cured the problem. I really hate to disassemble
double engines.
I had often wished (there he goes again) that pilot and trailing truck
wheels would be double insulated thus solving some of those problems.

I started to have sporadic shorts in my M1 which otherwise runs very
well. Sometimes you can get lucky as it will throw a spark at the
offending area. Of course I was not that lucky. After a few different
10 minute spurts of trying to find the short I got frustrated and
ripped off the tender brake shoes SURE that was it. HAH! Nope not it.
A piece of heat shrink tubing on the drawbar moved allowing it to
intermittently short at the rear of the loco. UGH!
Patience is what is needed!
