Here's a tip I gleaned from the model car people. Go to the auto parts store (The WWW if your parts store doesn't have it.) and buy a gallon of 'Super Clean' degreaser. Soak your shells in it until the paint literally falls off. Sometimes in less than a day, sometimes a couple of days, depending on the kind of paint you're trying to remove. Works like a champ. Removes the paint, leaves the shell untouched. Check out the story yourself on the web. It's well documented (at least the last time I looked.)
