Don't you just love three-letter acronyms! :-)

Last week I mentioned that I had received the S-CAB system. I spent about a week of modeling time doing my first install (most of it yesterday and today). It is my S-Helper Service' NW2 switcher engine. I completed it about an hour or so ago. It successfully ran on my layout with the Digitrax DCC system OFF; no track power!

I took lots of photos during the two attempts at installing all the components into the engine. I wrote an article of the final install that worked, and I just posted it on my web site. You can see the installation here:

I also updated the article I posted last week about the S-CAB system itself. I added some more observations, as well as some additional information that Neil provided to me. You can see that article here:

Both articles have links to each other, so you can start with whichever one you want. When I had the basic components installed, I tested the chassis on the layout, and it worked. I then put the chassis on my desk to get ready to turn off the throttle, when I thought that it might be neat to show the chassis moving on my desk. I took a quick video of it and posted it on the web. You can see it here (there's also a link to it from my installation article):

My conclusion is that this was quite a bit of work. I enjoyed the process, though. If you have never installed a non-plug-n-play DCC decoder in an engine, I would recommend that you get one of the authorized installers to do the work for you. I've done quite a few installs, so I didn't have any problem with this one. It was just challenging to figure out how to fit all the parts. I am happy with this new system. I'm glad I got it, and I plan to convert my other engines in the near future. Highly recommended if you are interested in battery-powered locomotives.

Enjoy,
 - Peter.
