Hi Fred....
Maybe a bit damp, but not necessarily all wet. The theory of abrasives
creating miniscule scratches which then accumulate dirt which then cause poor
electrical contact which then causes poor operation has been around for years.
Lots and lots of people believe it. There are just as many people that say it
is hogwash and ask for some sort of scientific experimentation to prove the
claim. To the best of my knowledge, nobody has ever run a controlled
experiment to prove it one way or the other.
Personally, I tend to think it might become an issue if the layout is in a
dirty or very dusty environment. In a clean environment, I would think the
effects are minimal to non-existent. Of course that is just my theory which is
also unproven at this time.
I use Bright Boy abrasive cleaners at times for cleaning off really bad spots
of paint/glue/etc. from the rail heads. There absolutely no difference in
operation between the areas where I used Bright Boy and the areas where I used
a soft cloth. Makes no diff as far as I can tell.
Maybe you are perfectly dry?
