Hi George,

Our days, there are many many good cameras and honestly, my recommendation
is to NOT go with Nikon or Canon. You pay for the brand and their entry
level cameras are not better and sometime not as good as the others. In my
opinion, Sony makes the best prosumer cameras. If you don't need the vast
choices of lenses that Nikon or Canon have in their line then Sony is a
better choice. (Sony makes the sensors for many other brands, including
Nikon)

But for vacation photos and be able to take model photos, I would stay away
from DSLR, they are bulky to carry, and instead seriously consider new
mirror less cameras with interchangeable lenses such as the Sony NEX line or
Olympus PEN and some others. These cameras have larger sensor (APS-C) then
point and shoot. The photo quality from these cameras are at par with the
prosumer DSLRs.

As Brook Stover mention, to make good model photos, you need a camera that
will allow you manual setting of the aperture.

If you decide to go point and shoot, There are lots of good "vacation"
cameras but most do not allow manual setting.

Good luck

Subject: {S-Scale List} Camera for Christmas

  Group,

I received money for a digital camera for Christmas. Anyone recommend a
all-purpose camera $500 and under that would still take decent layout shots?
Anyone have such a animal? Most of the photos will be vacations and such.

  Thanks,
  George Courtney
