I have never heard of F1 for an F stop but for the sake of this discussion F1 would be awful depth of field. The smaller number is actually a larger aperture opening allowing more light in and a faster shutter speed. For layouts you are generally going to need about F11 or higher. I am finding my best shots to be in the mid 20s for an F stop. Such shots are almost always done on a tripod as the shutter speed could easily be 1 second or longer which is too long for hand held. There is a reason as to why a smaller aperture opening results in a greater depth of field. I don't remember what it is.
