Frank Knight set up a wireless router and connected to my Android Samsung  
phone and his i phone[i think] and we each controlled a loco on the Sn2  
Crew layout.

You hit the nail on the head there. At the recent Springfield show,  some
modular setups were using smartphones and tablets as wireless  throttles.
Even if you have to buy an old Android phone or iPod/iPhone,  plus the
application, it's cheaper than the commercial wireless throttles  from the
DCC vendors.

And the problem with trying to  use different systems (Lenz vs NCE vs etc) 
on
the same layout makes me  believe that we simply replaced one kind of
confusion with another  one.
We did not have that problem way back then....
