The interesting part is that folks can endlessly discuss unhappiness with a
tiny fraction of an inch on the couplers, but be totally satisfied running
shorty passenger cars or operating steam locomotives with a drawbar that is way
too long or having spike heads the size of grapefruits.
Gathering range issues can be solved by placing small washers on axle ends to
remove excessive sideslop found in many older S trucks. Breaking an all-metal
KD#5 tells me the engineer needs education in train handling. Having pulled 97
cars up a grade without any problems tells me it isn't the coupler at fault.
Problems with easy solutions should not be viewed as a reason to select one
coupler or another. Just fix the problem and then make the coupler decision
afterwards.
I guess it is all a matter of perspective. In the end, I suspect personal
taste and familiarity is what makes the decision for most of us. I am happy
with my choice and I hope everyone else is happy with theirs.
