Model T Fords were shipped in boxcars as far back as 1912. Ford had some 
special cars with blocking to hold the cars up on end (wheels off) to get 
more Ts in one boxcar.
When I first moved to Oroville, I worked for the owner of Solano Railcar, 
who's main customer was Trailer Train. They did all the wreck & other repair 
here on the old roundhouse site (when the first started they were IN the 
roundhouse, but it burnt down one night shortly after the Flying Scotsman 
locomotive was serviced & stored here--that would have been an international 
tragedy if it had still been in the house! As it was, a lot of history, 
including some very old passenger cars were lost in the fire. But now I'm 
drifting way off thread.
