I experimented with several other motors and the one from an Atlas HO scale 
Alco S series loco provides acceptable low speed starts/stops for switching, 
see attached photo. Compared to the NWSL motor in the initial install, the 
Atlas starts a bit better but the NWSL is smoother overall. I tried a Canon 
motor, an Atlas black can and a NWSL 20323D-9 motor in the AM S12 chassis but 
slow operation was not good. One explanation must be the AM truck gearing...it 
seems tight compared to the Atlas HO Alco S series truck though it's properly 
lubed with no binding. I have the Canon motor installed in a scratchbuilt S 
scale chassis using the Atlas HO Alco S series gear trucks and it runs silky 
smooth from a crawl on DC.
