Hi Bill, Having major suppliers will increase the number of S modelers if
these new suppliers can provide a broader range of equipment at lower prices.
Guy will switch when it become logistically and economically feasible. HO is
popular because there a ton of stuff out there at affordable prices. Almost all
old HO is scale and usable on a contemporary scale layout with some simple
upgrades to couplers and wheels, while a majority of old S stuff is flyer cars
which are either totally useless to a scale modelers or need a lot of work to
convert to scale use. Combine this with the spotty availability of scale trucks
and other parts and it's easy to see why HO guys go with HO even if they would
rather go with S scale. For instance if one wants 57 foot reefers in HO scale
it's possible to build up a fleet of 20 or more PFE cars all with different
numbers and paint schemes for about $5 per car, add metal finer tread wheels
for about $2 per car and KD scale whisker couplers for about $1 per car and
you're good to go. Contrast that with S scale where no one even built rtr
plastic 57 foot reefers, the only option is the old wooden kit cars which are
long out of production. Then people have the nerve to stand up and say S scale
won't sell? Well nothing will sell if there is non of it to buy......DaveBranum
