I only buy what I want on my layout and don't buy things I don't want.  Used 
to think that was common.  I looked at the Lionel 2-8-8-2 when I realized it 
was a USRA version of the Y-3 not the Y-6.  Checked a few sources and 
discovered the prototype was 115 scale feet long and Lionel's version is only 
107 scale feet long.
   This was good news.  On the Southern branch line I model Southern didn't run 
any USRA 2-8-8-2's but did run shorter LS-1 and LS-2 malleys.  The malleys were 
later simpled.  Knowing River Raisin will never run the LS-2 engines I really 
want, I was open to some compromise.
If there will never be a scale version I'm willing to run a stand in.  However 
the Southern's LS-2 boilers were considerably less than the USRA Y-3 version 
boiler so that's out and I'll stick to my SHS F-3's which Don Thompson 
thoughtfully numbered for Bid Sid, the first two F-3's on my branch.  Thanks,

  Won' buy the Lionel engine.  It would cost at least $3,000 to get it up to 
snuff. Sticking to prototype closely is as "serious" modeler Jack Burgess says, 
"to keep from me from spending money I don't have on attractive items that 
don't fit my layout.  I only buy what I want to go on my layout.  Hadn't 
realized I should consider how others feel about what I put on my layout.
