I only buy what I want on my layout and don't buy things I don't want. Used
to think that was common. I looked at the Lionel 2-8-8-2 when I realized it
was a USRA version of the Y-3 not the Y-6. Checked a few sources and
discovered the prototype was 115 scale feet long and Lionel's version is only
107 scale feet long.
This was good news. On the Southern branch line I model Southern didn't run
any USRA 2-8-8-2's but did run shorter LS-1 and LS-2 malleys. The malleys were
later simpled. Knowing River Raisin will never run the LS-2 engines I really
want, I was open to some compromise.
If there will never be a scale version I'm willing to run a stand in. However
the Southern's LS-2 boilers were considerably less than the USRA Y-3 version
boiler so that's out and I'll stick to my SHS F-3's which Don Thompson
thoughtfully numbered for Bid Sid, the first two F-3's on my branch. Thanks,
Don.
Won' buy the Lionel engine. It would cost at least $3,000 to get it up to
snuff. Sticking to prototype closely is as "serious" modeler Jack Burgess says,
"to keep from me from spending money I don't have on attractive items that
don't fit my layout. I only buy what I want to go on my layout. Hadn't
realized I should consider how others feel about what I put on my layout.
