A friend of mine worked on Union Pacific ( known as Utterly Pathetic to employees ) during the time they were snapping up any railroad that had track & locomotives. She said it was common to see 8 or more of anybodies units pulling a train out of a yard, the hope being that enough would run to get the train to the next yard, where the "power" became someone else's problem. When I worked on the Santa Fe in the early 1960’s I saw all manner of repaints, mixed consists of passenger cars and stuff that was hardly recognizable as ATSF. Bottom line: The Santa Fe, like all rail roads used whatever would run and whatever was handy that wasn’t in the shop. Some stuff would barely run but would be pressed into service anyway, even on the main line. Many of the old photos we use to detail models were staged for photography PR purposes and bare little resemblance to what was actually rolling on a daily revenue basis. With all due respect, modelers who have not had the opportunity to work on the 1:1 rail road have a very narrow view, and if I may suggest, an unrealistic view of what “prototype” means. Roy Inman
