Friends,

I've been somewhat busy trying make way too many things happen. First
another Houston S member and I have been devoting some of our Saturdays
to doing some refurbishing of the main sections of our modular layout.
We first displayed the layout in 89', so it has some miles on it being
dragged around, stored in weird places and setup in a hurry.

Next I've been working on refurbished a stub end yard on my home
layout. It was a grand experiment that actually worked out fairly
well. It's a six track stub yard that is really just a 20" shelf about
6' long. I recently replaced the incorrect roadbed with some better
stuff. I recycled the old Miller track and was able to save most of
it. I've attached a photo of the roadbed soaking in a "hot tub" to
remove the ballast. I've now relayed most of the track and made a
removable bridge section better. The bridge section contains a curved
turnout, and two 3 way switches to go from a single track to the six
track yard, with all this happening on a slight grade.

Next I've started to build a turntable from a kit that I bought at a
past train show. It's made by Custom Layout??, in HO. It's a clear
plastic kit made from laser cut sheets. The construction is totally
different than anything I've ever done. For instance the pit wall is
made from 4 curved sections that form the circle and then are stacked
like bricks to the desired thickness. A motor from Berkshire Junction
was included. Anyway, I cut out the circle in the plywood deck and
started to laugh-- as it reminded me of something that Jay Leno would
have mentioned--"What is It"? To the un-railroaded person it could be a
Texas one hole'er--it's off to the far right, twice as big as needed and
is padded! Anyway the other two photos show how it drops into the
future addition. One hint I will pass along relating to something I
should have done. Run a quick burst of paint across the clear parts--if
you drop the tiny parts on the floor they are difficult to find being
clear--blue or even pink would help!
