My sincere condolences to the Bortz family in the passing of John.
I first met John while working as a volunteer on the New Hope & Ivyland in
1970. At that time I never knew he was a model railroader let alone an S
scaler. When I became interested in S scale about 15 years later I visited him
for S kits he was advertising.
He was building a NYC Niagara for Ed Loizeaux at the time. I was hooked! I
decided that was what I wanted to do. His layout was just the neatest thing I
had seen. John sent me to see Frank Titman and I joined the LVSG. Little did I
know that it would lead me to rescuing SSL&S.
I now proudly own that Niagara that got me into S.
