According to the story I heard, in the 1940's, the NMRA decided that
the name C-D (Cleveland Designed), the original name used for 1/64
models, was tied too clostly to the manufacturer's name. They decided
that S would be a good choice because of the S's that were used in
three SixteenthS (3/16) and one Sixty fourth (1/64).
