Marty you didn't have to go to all that trouble. All you needed to do was rub the part of the axel where you were going to mount the gear that was too thin against some Lionel. In a few days a rust and/or crud buildup would appear. Just slide the gear over the rust/crud and it holds the gear firmly, yet its still adjustable. Note: Don't rub too much Lionel on it as you'll get too much rust/crud and the axel might rot through causing you to need to replace the whole axel prematurely. Enjoy....
