Well, I'm probably unique amongst this group, as I was raised "on the
other side of the counter"--actually, until we built the new home/office
when I was in eighth grade, the office WAS our living room! We still don't
have a "secure room" type office, when you walk in the office door, you look
directly into the living room through a large glassless window opening. A
good incentive to keep the living room clean! (it's not my house, it's my
brother's--whew!)
Anyway, I do agree that all this double-booking not only makes it hard on
others to get a room, until the last minute, it also creates an artifical
demand for rooms, which CAN artifically raise rates (Something I was never
taught to do, we had two rates: Summertime and the rest of the year, and the
prices weren't all that different).
However, that being said I do remember booking rooms at "the last
minute" for the major Northern Calif. old car swap meet in Turlock, and
being surprised I could get the room. Well when I arrived, it WAS a mistake,
but they still were able to get me a room by taking the spare TVs out of one
(they were doing a remodel). I have also accidently overbooked and had to
call around that AM to get a room for the people (discovered the mistake in
the AM when I was setting out the reservations, one of the joys of a
non-automated system!). The guests still weren't happy, and I couldn't
blame them, although we offered to let them use all our facility and I had a
room for them the next day (we get week-long vacationers). Sad thing, it was
an old-time customer too.
Anyway, call into the office, not the 800 reservation number and confirm
your reservation and your deposit (visa etc.) and then let someone else have
your other rooms!
Of course, if you end up with no room, I was never here!
