Actually there were several different formulas used by Gilbert from
1946 to 1966.

We were the first to duplicate the ORIGINAL 1946 formula. We had 3
samples analyzed in 1976, they were all different. However, Maury
Romer supplied me with a printed formula and an explanation of the
changes.

The ORIGINAL formula is NOT 17 parts kerosene to one part cedar wood
oil. In fact there are more than one type of cedar wood oil and
kerosene to begin with. If that were the ingredients and in that
ratio, we could sell it for a whole lot less than 2 oz. for $7.00.

In fact the major reason for one of the formula changes was that a
version of the formula that did have a very high amount of kerosene
(to reduce costs), had to be changed when Gilbert introduced plastic
steamer shells. Seems the high concentration of kerosene softened
and eat the plastic. At a ratio of 17 to 1, it is certain the same
thing will occur.

In later years, Gilbert added extenders and even later changed to a
nontoxic mineral oil base. Some of the erroneous formulas are a
result of using old samples to analyze. This is especially true with
the red capsules, as the gelatin in the capsule dissolves over time,
into the fluid. To get an accurate analysis, you have to have the
capsule analyzed as well.
