Rance you are lucky your Windows probably detected it was screwed up by your deletion and so it restored the previous setup. Windows ME is the first system that does that (not always so successfully).
Also note most new viruses do steal your address book and send themselves to everyone in it. Plus they make it look like YOU sent it!
