The only tricky part I encountered was rolling the wheel set into
position around the gear so the quartering comes out right. Removing the
bottom plate is straightforward.  Keep the unaffected wheels in their
current gear mesh without disturbing their quartering.  Then make sure
the added wheels end up quartered to match when in mesh with the gears. 
Took me a few tries to get it right.  Not difficult- just a trial and
error process.
It helps if you use a stand that holds your loco upside down on the
bench.  Can be a simple v shaped trough formed by 2 boards and a cloth
or foam liner.
