I have seen them up close and don't think they would work.  AM rail is
significantly shorter in height.  I have connected them by soldering
braided wire between the 2.  Needs a high wattage iron, lots of solder
and flux for steel.  Clean AM rail to shiny brass and AF to shiny steel
where the wire attaches.

I use 1/2 of an O with 1/2 of an HO to get the proper width.  You can do
this because they're the same thickness.  Also. I think Scenery
Unlimited now sells cork at the proper S width.
