My .02 For engines I use original AF transformers on one layout and MRC Dual 027 on another. Both are High Rail.
The layout that uses AF transformers requires one transformer for each track loop and a transformer for lights, switches and other accessories for good performance. The layout which uses the MRC transformers never is used above 40% of power to operate trains (only original AF (without sound), later AM and SHS are run). Original AF transformers are used for switches and accessories. Many track power feeds are used to reduce the loss through the original AF high rail track.
