I used a pair of "Z Stuff" IR detectors and a relay to power flashers at
a crossing on our modular layout. They are a little out of scale but
work great. They detect the physical presence of a train so no wiring
of blocks is required. This is ideal in a modular layout where the
flashers need to start operating a few feet before the train gets
there. I can never be sure exactly which module precedes the one with
the flasher so block wiring was not desirable in that application.

Minus:
1) Not to scale
2) They won't scan across both tracks of the dual mainline so we became
direction sensitive. Trains had to run right handed. I mean to check
with Z stuff to find out if we can add 2 more detectors to avoid
direction sensitivity.

Plus:
This taught me how well IR detectors work. I have seen plans to make
them and bury them in the track. This would be the ideal way to go for
IR.
