Well Roger, one reason is that you might want to run trains different ways on the same layout. Here's a simple example: say you have a big figure eight. now you add some switches and curves so that if you throw the switches right you get two oval routes out of the two halves of the eight, skipping the crossing.. To run separate trains on them you need two linked transformers. When you throw the switches so you have a figure eight route, either transformer can power it. There are many situations like this that arise when layouts start to get complex. Using a common ground sytem and power switching AF turnouts with sense switches implanted, handles them effortlessly without a lot of block section wiring.. Hope this helps.
