All of the 4-6-X American Flyer Locos came from the factory with the "bump"
on the side rods to the rear of the loco and the "elongated" hole to the
front. The ones you are seeing otherwise are ones that have been taken apart
by someone and put back together incorrectly. Mr. Dewey is right on this one.
