I REALLY enjoyed seeing your crane and also enjoyed reading about it. <<<< http://home.att.net/~timboy/Crane.html <<<<< One thing though. You mentioned: "The Flyer crane's magnet raises and lowers by hand, while the crane itself is powered to swing from side to side. I use a hand crank to swing my crane cab." My magnetic crane is a one button deal with the Gilbert reversing mechanism (just like in the trains). When you push the button...the crane will turn from one side to the other and the magnet will lower to pick up the scrap. When you push the button some more (taking it through the reverse cycle) the crane's head turns back in the other direction AND rasies the magnet. The trick is you have to keep you finger on the button or else you drop the magnetic load. The magnet is always energized whenever the button is pushed. The crank on the back end of the crane raises and lowers the boom, but I don't use this much, as I have set boom to a height where it workds well. Again, great job on your crane.
