I have a control panel that is mounted on large casters with a 4'-0"
thither. 4'-0"x 1'-6", 30" high cabinet with sliding doors for storage
and to hide some of the wiring. It has a 15" high (4' long, 7" at the
base, 1" at top) sloping control panel with track plan, block controls
and tracking lamps. Terminal strips are mounted on the back, and
numbered to ease trouble shooting, I can move the panel away from the
layout or to a different position, I can set on a chair behind the panel
and access all of the control wiring with ease. If I had more room I
would make the thither longer. It adds a number of feet of wire
required to the layout so you would not want to make the thither longer
then practical or necessary. Transformers can be recessed into the top
of the cabinet if so desired. I power my layout with two 12B's and one
ZW , sound controls are mounted beside the transformers. Switch controls
are Walthers SPDP momentary contact (telephone type) position of handle
indicates position of switch, they are mounted on the track plan
(sloping panel). Having built many a control panel in my time, I believe
it is worth every bit of extra wire.
