Hello and thank you to the many members who responded to my question
about a 283 ever being made in cast metal. Right before the engine
shipped to my home the seller said it was indeed plastic which ended
the mystery. Unfortunately, I'm in the process of returning the
engine to the ebay seller. It turns out the engine was held together
in the front by just the smoke stack (smoke fuild) tube. The engine
was missing both front screws and the holes for the missing screws
where stripped out and half chipped off. I've seen this problem
before with 283s (stripped front screw holes) but this was really
bad. As I told the seller it looked like this engine had been around
the block a few times. The coupler was also broken. I ate the cost
of shipping both ways but at least I'll get back my purchase price.

However I wish to express my thanks to all you good folks who took
the time to answer my original question. It shows to the character
of the members here. First rate!!!

Thank you again and happy railroading!

Rob
