John and others:

I am the manager (for lack of a better word) for the Greater Seattle S
Gaugers. We are a group that gets togeather at each others houses about 9
times a year if I can get enough people to volunteer a house. If we can we
try to mix in an SN3 layout to visit, or mayby another size layout. You can
learn and enjoy from any size.

We decided long ago ( I go back to 1980, the group goes back to the early
70's) there were to be No officers, No actual rules, No Dues, etc.

I set up meetings and 10 or so of the 35+ on the email list show up at
that time. We have a good time , play trains, talk, each pay a token door
fee to help pay for the homeowners supplying refreshments, and go back to
our own lives for another month.

In 1980 iwas the youngest in the group and 22 years later I probably still
am except now I am in my 50's. we have a mix of Flyer collectors, Flyer
operators, Highrail types, scale types, one 2-rail O gauge guy, one Lionel O
guy, and now an S and O narrow gauge guy.

We don't really have anyone with the motivation to start a clubhouse type
layout or even a group layout for shows. I always think of Battlestar
Gallactia with its "Rag-Tag group of space ships". Thats our sort of group
with a range from excellent layouts to minimal layouts, scale to flyer
and beyond. I know I don't have the time with my work but most seem happy
with just the monthly meetings. The other problem is that a couple of or
members with layouts have passed away and a couple more have moved to warmer
(dryer) climates.

Just some thoughts

Subject: [S-Trains] Club Meetings?

S Friends:

I'm curious as to how the various clubs out there handle their meeting
locations. Do they have a clubhouse, do they move around to different
member's houses, do they pay rent, do they get a donation of space, is
their layout permanently mounted, is their layout stored in pieces?
Stuff like that.

I thought it might generate some discussion and ideas if we share this
information. Jeff Madden do you think it might be worthy of an
article in the Dispatch?

For the record: the Rocky Mountain Hi-Railers in Boise, Idaho have a
donation of storage area for our portable layout from a local
government, and we can assemble the layout during a meeting to work on
it. We try to repay the donation by volunteering our layout for the
annual Depot celebration (City sponsored). We also meet occasionally at
members' homes to view a personal layout, have a clinic, watch videos,
etc. We would like to find an "angel" to donate a meeting area where we
can leave the layout assembled between meetings.

What do the rest of you do?

Thanks,
John Eichmann, Coordinator
