Jim this is not aimed at you specifically.... If the feeling by the marketing department is that "nostalgia" is driving most American Flyer purchases then if you were running the company you would probably make the reissue look like the originals.
Especially if you already owned the tooling for the shells. I know my feeling is that most American Flyer purchases are done for nostalgic reasons. All you have to do is listen to the frequent anecdotes on this list which provide misty-eyed accounts of first flyer sets and Christmases past. This is the best listing we have seen out of Lionel/LLC and last year was the best before this one. They from what I understand are mostly sold out. So how can anyone say they don't know the market? The only thing members of this list seem to have in common is S-gauge. Everyone wants their individual needs met. I am tempted to do a survey. The question would be how many of you would place a firm order for the either one of the Baldwins as they are planned? How may would place an order only if they included the handrails and cab modification. The sum of the two would be the total firm market on this list. I would venture a guess that adding the changes would not significantly increase the numbers. Bottom line they may know the market better than any individual who is merely expressing his own personal desires.
