The Campbell's plant is now the site of a minor league baseball park. Although, N.J. is known for tomatoes, and a major maker of Pizza Sauce is the Violet Packing Company, in Vineland, N.J., the best tomatoes for use in cooking are from California. I should know, I sold canned tomatoes for 20 years to the Italian and Pizza restaurant trade in the DC area. CA tomatoes are not as acid as the ones from N.J. and are more solid. Growing conditions in CA are better. They are packed into #10 cans in October of every year. Whole, diced, paste, puree, pizza sauce, crushed, etc.
TCA had a great article about Heinz and the development of RR cars to get product to the plant, plus to have them to like billboards advertising Heinz products. Of course, now we are in PA!
