Dry transfers for steam loco tender lettering are not currently available. The former maker, Mrs Bennet, had some kind of dispute with Lionel (sorry, Duck). Most of the ones out there have been bought up. I have tried to cajole several people into taking over; no luck so far. Someone has got to step up and take over making repro transfers, decals and stickers for Flyer. The decals available up to now have been very poor quality, not close to the originals in size font or color, and the transfers actually not much better, but at least we had SOMETHING. Computer graphics and digital cameras have come a long way, and it ought to be possible to produce a line of extremely high quality reproductions. This would mean that if you had a partially damaged decal or lettering, you could just use a piece of a repro to patch an original. This would be progress.
Dry transfers of loco numbers have never been available. You have to use Alphabet/numeral sheets of dry transfers. Best way is to cut out each individual number and align them reverse side up on a piece of Scotch Removeable tape, which is transparent and has the same stickum as Post-its. Do this under magnification with tweezers. Then apply the transfers through the tape onto the loco. The transfers available up to now produce lettering that is much brighter and whiter than the original. There are ways around this, but I won't go into that here. Rubber stamps are expensive and messy, but can give great results. It's best to contrive some sort of mechanical device to lower the stamp straight onto the piece, sort of like a drill press. To ink the stamp, roll out a mixture of paint or ink, thinner, and Cobalt Drier onto a small glass plate with a breyer. Then ink the stamp from the glass plate. Flyer lettering varied somewhat in color, so you may want to tint the ink or paint with blue, brown, yellow or gray to get the right tone. Doug Peck is producing stamps these days. A lot of practice is necessary before you apply lettering this way. Tom Jarcho S-Trains list sponsor: http://www.americanflyertrains.com All the Flyer you desire...books and accessories too!
