I don't remember seeing this thread.
Why is the AF Northern called a "Challenger" when we all know a Challenger
is a 4-6+6-4?
(The prototype 4-8-4s are "Northerns" to honor the Northern Pacific
-- the first railroad to own this wheel arrangement.)
(The first, prototype 4-6+6-4s were built for the UP to head the new
passenger train "The Challenger." The "Union Pacific" type was already
taken in the 4-12-2.)
Was this done to shelter Southerners who might still be fighting the war of
1860 - 1865? Or was this done to "Challenge" the big kid on the block:
