Not wishing to butcher nice AM track in order to have automatic
uncoupling ala the old days, I used regular AF remote uncouplers
mounted under the table, with only minor modification. Basically a
block of wood cut to thickness such that when laid on the top of the
fiber or bakelite pad, it was the same height as the metal housing of
the uncoupler. Take a section of K&S brass U-channel just wide enough
to snugly fit over the two metal ribs that comprise the actual
uncoupling bar of the original uncoupler ( this channel fits on them
upside down ). Measure the distance from the channel up thru the
layout, thru the roadbed and the ties. Cut a length of K&S 3/16"
dia. rod whatever that measurement is. Solder the rod to the
channel. Drill hole thru layout, roadbed, ties big enough for rod to
slip thru without binding. Mount modified uncoupler under table,
check length of rod, should "just" clear tops of ties. Remove
uncoupler, drill and tap rod for number 4-40 screw. Take another
piece of K&S channel, this time with base down, shape to resemble the
acutating bars of original uncoupler, height will not be the same
since AM rail height not the same as ACG, round ends as were ACG so
weights don't catch. Drill hole for number 4 screw. Mount assembly
less the last piece of channel under layout, attach new acutating
channel to post with screw, add wires, electricity, have fun
uncoupling. Can provide sketch ( better than the 1,000 ( +/- ) word
description above.
